What would you do if you discovered a $1 million lottery ticket in the trash?
Abhi Shah gave the ticket back to the woman who had thrown it away.
The Lucky Spot convenience store in Springfield, Massachusetts, is owned by Abhi’s parents. Aruna Shah, Abhi’s mother, sold the winning ticket to one of their frequent customers, according to Abhi. After the customer thought the ticket was worthless, it remained abandoned in the store for ten days.
“One evening, I was going through the tickets from the trash and [noticed] that she didn’t scratch the number,” Abhi told WWLP. “I scratched the number and it was $1 million underneath the ticket.”
“We didn’t sleep two nights,” said Abhi’s father Maunish Shah. “He called my mom, grandparents in India, they said, ‘Give it back, we don’t want that money’.”
The ticket was returned by the family. They knew where to find her because she was a frequent visitor to the shop.
“I handed her the $1 million ticket as soon as she walked in, and she freaked out and cried like a kid,” Maunish said.
